Industry Moves: Former Red Hat COO Tim Buckley Joins rPath Board As Executive Chairman
rPath today announced that Tim Buckley, principal of Buckley Investments and former chief operating officer of Red Hat, has joined the rPath board of directors as the executive chairman. From his newly created post, Buckley will help rPath accelerate its push into the enterprise market with solutions for reducing the cost and complexity of delivering applications to traditional, virtualized, and cloud-based environments.
Buckley brings more than 20 years of experience in sales and marketing leadership for high-growth technology start-ups. Prior to founding Buckley Investments LLC, a Raleigh, NC-based consulting company, he was COO for Red Hat, where he was part of the executive team that transformed the company from a start-up to the dominant provider of open source operating systems to the enterprise market. Red Hat has publicly credited Buckley with its worldwide growth and transformation into an enterprise sales organization.
Prior to Red Hat, Buckley was senior vice president of worldwide sales for Seattle-based Visio Corp., where he was instrumental in growing the company from start-up to IPO and ultimately through a $1.5 billion acquisition by Microsoft. Earlier, Buckley was an executive with Aldus, the developers of PageMaker; and Approach, which he helped launch from its early stages through a major acquisition by Lotus Development Corp
Industry Moves: VMware Taps Tod Nielsen For Chief Operating Officer Role
VMware announced today the appointment of Tod Nielsen to the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer. Nielsen will report directly to President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Maritz.Nielsen, 43, joins VMware from Borland Software Corporation where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer since November 2005. Prior to Borland, Nielsen held several key executive management positions at leading software companies including Microsoft, BEA and Oracle.
Nielsen brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in enterprise software and application development to VMware. Prior to Borland, Nielsen served as senior vice president, marketing and global sales support for Oracle Corporation. Prior to Oracle, Nielsen was the chief marketing officer and executive vice president of engineering at BEA Systems, where he had overall responsibility for BEA’s worldwide marketing strategy and operations, as well as all research and development operations. Nielsen joined BEA after the acquisition of his private company, Crossgain Inc., where he served as its chief executive officer. Nielsen also spent twelve years with Microsoft Corporation, in various roles, including general manager of database and developer tools, vice president of developer tools, and, vice president of Microsoft’s platform group.
Industry Moves: Maurizio Carli Joins VMware As General Manager EMEA
VMware announced today the appointment of Maurizio Carli as General Manager of VMware’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Carli is responsible for strategic planning, business operations and management of key functions for the region, including sales, channels, services and marketing. He will report directly to Carl Eschenbach, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations, for VMware.
Carli brings more than 20 years of experience in the technology industry and knowledge of the EMEA region across several technology waves and economic cycles, including experience in emerging markets. He joins VMware from his most recent role as EMEA Managing Director for Google Enterprise. His prior roles include Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMEA for Business Objects and Vice President of the EMEA Software Group for IBM.

Susan Roberts will replace Grandinetti as Senior Director of Marketing, after a career at Dassault Systems where she was Director of Global Branding and Marketing Communications and Paxonix where she was Director of Marketing.

VMware has lost a key executive today with the departure of Nand Mulchandani, former Senior Director of Security Products, who has decided to take on a job as CEO for OpenDNS instead of staying on at the troubled virtualization leader.
Virtual Iron has lost its Director of Corporate Marketing Tim Walsh, who started his own consulting business.
