NextIO Raises $ 18.8 Million In Series C Funding For Virtualizing Server Communication

Austin-based connectivity virtualization developer NextIO announced Friday that it had raised $ 18.8 million in a third round series as the five-year-old company prepares to launch its first products to enable distributed computing systems to connect and communicate using any of a variety of technology standards.

The deal was led by Crescendo Ventures and Adams Capital Management, and included previous investors JK&B Capital, the VentureTech Alliance arm of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., and Dell, as well as two new strategic investors. The new funding brings total equity investment in NextIO to about $ 40 million and will allow the company to launch its first commercial products with original equipment manufacturers (OEM) partners in the second quarter of this year.

NextIO co-founder and CEO K.C. Murphy said the company made its first switch products available to customers in late 2007 but will launch its primary appliance product in April, in conjunction with new products introduced by OEM partners. The products are aimed at bringing the same advantages of virtualization to connectivity technology that developers including VMWare, Microsoft and the open source Xensource platform have brought to the server market.

NextIO’s product virtualizes I/O functions to bring high-performance computing capabilities to clustered systems of commodity servers. The products enable individual server connectivity using any of the several available connectivity standards with systems level technology that controls connectivity within a virtual “cloud.”

Windows Server 2008 Right On Schedule, But Hypervisor Product Hyper-V Delayed

Today, Microsoft will launch its new server software update at the Heroes Happen Here event. But while Windows Server 2008 will contain the beta bits for Hyper-V, the final product will be made available as an add-on “later in 2008”.

eWeek claims the delay will almost certainly cause enterprises to hold off on Windows Server 2008, backed by statements from analysts.

“We do not expect to see enterprise deployments of Windows Server 2008 of any significance until the final version of Hyper-V is out,” James Staten, principal analyst at Forrester Research.

The long development cycle for this new server product, which was five years in the making, has also allowed Linux to encroach on Microsoft’s base, Staten said, adding that this is unlikely to significantly erode the opportunities for Windows Server 2008.

eWeek goes on to say its release however marks a milestone for Microsoft, as the software includes lots of key technologies and services, many of which have been available to clients in early candidate form for several months.

Former Microsoft Executive Paul Maritz Joins EMC To Head Cloud Computing Initiatives

Microsoft’s cloud computing team will not be happy to learn about this: Paul Maritz, former senior executive at Microsoft, is to become president of EMC‘s cloud computing initiative, which competes directly with the Redmond-based software giant.

Maritz is rejoining the corporate world after seven years of dabbling in startups and philanthropy, now that his company Pi Corporation, a Seattle-based information management provider, has been acquired by EMC. The 100-person company will continue to operate as a standalone entity, similar to the way EMC lets VMWare run independently.

When the deal is finalized, Maritz will become president and general manager of EMC’s new Cloud Infrastructure and Services Division reporting to CEO Joe Tucci.The release reads:

“He will continue to directly oversee development and operations for Pi, along with other key elements of EMC’s cloud computing strategy, which include the EMC Fortress SaaS infrastructure, the Mozy online backup service and other upcoming EMC cloud infrastructure systems and software offerings under development.”

EMC wouldn’t say how much it paid in the all-cash deal, but said it should be done within the first quarter of 2008 and will “be dilutive by $.01 per diluted share in 2008.”
