FrontRange Solutions Launches Enteo v6 SR2

October 30, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

FrontRange Solutions, the developer of business software solutions, has announced the launch of its latest Client Lifecycle solution, Enteo v6 SR2, which helps organizations extend management of their IT systems to include secure zones and software virtualization based on VMware Thinapp.

While Demilitarized Zones (DMZs) have become a key feature of many IT organizations’ operations, managing the IT assets located in this secure area of the network has presented a number of problems. FrontRange Enteo Client Lifecycle Management solution eases the management of these vital systems without the need to change firewall or other security settings. This allows IT staff to maintain and update systems located in the DMZ far more quickly than was previously possible, ensuring a higher level of availability and productivity.

Enteo v6 SR2 also enables virtualized applications to be deployed and managed in the same way as physical operating systems, applications and patches. This enables organizations to more easily take advantage of the benefits of software virtualization, while also eliminating the need to separate configuration management systems to manage both physical and virtual assets.

Enteo v6 SR2 also introduces a wealth of additional new client management features, including support for Windows 2008 Server deployment, integration with the latest FrontRange ITSM solution and the ability to directly import IT asset data from the Centennial Discovery audit solution.

Enteo v6 SR2 is available with immediate effect.

eG Innovations And Leostream Team Up

October 29, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

eG Innovations, a provider of performance monitoring and triage solutions for virtual and physical IT infrastructures, and Leostream, developer of virtual hosted desktop software, announced today that they have established a technology partnership to leverage their combined strengths and define a new standard of performance and flexibility in the area of virtualized desktop computing.

Under the agreement, eG Innovations’ virtualization monitoring software, the eG VM Monitor, has been enhanced with specialized monitoring capabilities for the Leostream Connection Broker software. With this integration, organizations deploying virtual desktop environments have a comprehensive solution to establish, monitor, and report performance baselines for end-user virtual desktop access to enterprise applications.

Part of the eG Enterprise Suite, the eG VM Monitor is a comprehensive solution for monitoring and managing all aspects of virtual hosts and guests, whether the infrastructure is used to support server or desktop applications. Coupled with the ability of the eG Enterprise Suite to monitor over 80 applications eG VM Monitor – with its patent-pending In-N-Out Monitoring technology — provides a comprehensive end-to-end solution for monitoring and managing the performance of virtual IT infrastructures. The eG VM Monitor won the Best of VMworld 2008 Gold award in the Application and Infrastructure Management category at the VMworld 2008 conference in September.

The Leostream Connection Broker is an independent, flexible, cost-effective solution for regulating access to end user computing resources hosted in the data center. Leostream provides a comprehensive approach to desktop virtualization. The product enables organizations to manage end-user access to computing resources such as desktops, Terminal Server sessions, and streaming applications. It provides a scalable, fault-tolerant management layer that centralizes and consolidates IT resources in the data center and then creates, assigns, and delivers desktops to end users.

The Future of Xen At Red Hat

October 28, 2008 by Kris Buytaert Leave a Comment

As you might know, most of the development for the upcoming Red Hat releases is happening in the Fedora project, so if you want to keep an eye on what’s going to happen in future RedHat releases Fedora is a good place to look.

Reuven pointed out that the next Fedora release (Fedora 10) won’t have Dom0 support.

This however is not yet the strategic decision from Redhat after buying Qumranet and thus KVM. But merely a lack of time before the release has to ship.

Xen typically is being developed with an older 2.6.18 Linux kernel release and forward porting of these features is a time consuming effort. The typical kernel-xen package in Fedora has always been a bit behind on the kernel package
So the slow introduction of paravirt_ops, is keeping Dom0 support out of Fedora 10.

The idea behind paravirt_ops is to build a kernel structure that gives an interface to a virtualization layer, any virtualization layer, it allows the kernel to run on both a hypervisor and the actual hardware. Initial support for Xen, VMware and KVM is available.

Today running Fedora 10 as a host for your virtual machines will give you KVM as your only option. However Fedora 11 should solve that problem again. But then again, you probably don’t want to be running Fedora in a production environment, RedHat Enterprise or CentOS 5 are a much more viable alternative

PacketTrap Networks’ Perspective Software Now Includes Virtualization Monitoring

October 28, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

PacketTrap Networks is set to announce that its network troubleshooting and remediation solution, Perspective, now includes virtualization monitoring. The free virtualization module helps IT managers identify virtual machines and other resources throughout their life cycles. It is integrated into Perspective’s dashboard, which Richard Ptak from Ptak & Associates (www.ptaknoelassociates.com) calls a “powerful and intuitive interface that makes the task of getting information much easier.”

Perspective was designed with the help of more than 10,000 network administrators who provided critical input regarding features, functions and usability. This community of users helped determine the requirements for Perspective’s new virtualization module, which led to features such as discovery, tracking, capacity planning, traffic analysis and alerting/reporting notification capabilities.

Perspective’s Virtualization module makes it easy to monitor virtual environment to ensure it is running smoothly. It automatically discovers host ESX servers and associated guest virtual machines and provides insight into key statistics like status, CPU, memory, disk usage, and interface traffic. As resource allocation changes, Perspective updates to provide you with the most real-time information about a virtualized environment.
