Novell today announced the availability of PlateSpin Orchestrate 2.0, as well as ZENworks Application Virtualization 7.

For customers that require basic management of virtual machines or robust automation throughout the data center, PlateSpin Orchestrate 2.0 manages virtual machines and physical resources for all the industry’s leading hypervisors – including Windows Hyper-V, VMWare ESX and Xen integrated in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server – from a single interface, eliminating the need for data center administrators to master multiple tools. PlateSpin Orchestrate is part of Novell’s portfolio of workload management solutions that enables customers to build an agile and interoperable next-generation data center using their existing IT investments.

PlateSpin Orchestrate 2.0 is available now.

ZENworks Application Virtualization eliminates application compatibility problems with Windows desktops for greater security and management. This easy-to-use solution simplifies management and ensures secure, successful application deployment and operating system upgrades.

With this latest release, customers can quickly publish virtual applications to their ZENworks Configuration Management zone without ever leaving the packaging tool. ZENworks Application Virtualization allows customers to restrict virtual applications from running on devices not registered with their ZENworks Configuration Management zone and convert legacy applications into virtual applications – eliminating compatibility issues.

ZENworks Application Virtualization allows Windows administrators and managed service providers to quickly package applications into a secure, standalone executable that can be distributed and run on any Windows Vista, Windows XP or Windows 2000 workstations without a traditional install. With this latest release, virtual packages are isolated from the installation and configuration process in order to prevent them from interfering with other applications. Additionally, once the application is created it can now be distributed across Windows desktops using ZENworks management solutions.

Novell ZENworks Application Virtualization is available for a list price of $39 per user or instance license.

CohesiveFT Releases VPN-Cubed for EC2

March 4, 2009 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

CohesiveFT today announced the release of VPN-Cubed for EC2, a specially packaged version of the company’s customer-controlled cloud security offering for Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Amazon EC2 users now have immediate access to this specific VPN-Cubed use-case allowing them to create and configure their own VPN-Cubed overlay network inside of and across EC2’s geographically distinct regions. The VPN-Cubed overlay network provides four key capabilities EC2 users currently cannot control: static addressing for the user’s EC2 devices; topology control by using VPN-Cubed managers as virtual switches, virtual bridges or virtual routers; use of popular enterprise protocols like UDP Multicast for service discovery; and lastly encrypted communications between all devices on the overlay network.

VPN-Cubed for EC2 is available as a Free Edition which provides a high availability version for use in one EC2 region or in one EC2 VLAN, and a paid version which allows creation of a reliable, cross-region, cross-VLAN overlay network. Both are available through Amazon DevPay as “Paid AMIs”. EC2 users can now get their own highly available and secure VPN-Cubed overlay network up and running quickly and easily.

VPN-Cubed is the first commercial solution that enables customer control in a cloud, across multiple clouds, and between private infrastructure and the clouds. VPN-Cubed provides an overlay network that allows the customer control over addressing, topology, protocols, and encrypted communications for their devices deployed to virtual infrastructure or cloud computing centers. VPN-Cubed gives customers the confidence and flexibility to utilize cloud computing by offering a layer of security that the customer controls inside of 3rd party environments.

Catbird Debuts VMShield 2.0 With V-Tracker

March 4, 2009 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Catbird today announced the immediate availability of VMShield 2.0 with V-Tracker.

VMShield 2.0 leapfrogs legacy virtual firewall technology to enforce compliance and policy of both network and VM state, regardless of location or movement of VMs. With V-Tracker, VMShield 2.0 combines proven virtual machine tracking capabilities with in-depth monitoring of suspect activity on the network itself; preserves policies across hosts, clusters and vendor platforms; and automatically blocks out-of-policy or compromised VMs from breaching data center security.

VMShield 2.0 with V-Tracker is the latest innovation in Catbird’s comprehensive line of cross-platform, non-invasive security solutions for virtual and physical networks. Catbird’s encyclopedic Virtual Infrastructure Security Engine (VISE) correlates hundreds of machine attributes with access control, network segmentation, vulnerability and IDP security events for both virtual and physical machines, across multiple clusters and data centers, to deliver broad asset awareness and defense-in-depth.

Moreover, VMShield’s internal or external cloud-based platform with stateless monitoring enables unprecedented visibility and control to track virtual machines across clusters and detect and thwart potential security and policy violations before they escalate to a breach.

Catbird V-Tracker uniquely fingerprints each VM it tracks, even through virtual machine mobility. In combination with Catbird’s ground-breaking TrustZones policy enforcer, these machines stay monitored and protected via the Catbird Control Center, validating and enforcing policies for all VMs within a given TrustZone. Catbird’s automated quarantine mechanism instantly shuts down non-compliant virtual machines. The architecture is designed with maximum flexibility and portability to allow for cross-host and cross-platform coverage and ease of use.

VMShield 2.0 delivers a highly-correlated approach to virtualization security, a key capability for TrustZone enforcement and data protection. At its heart is the Catbird VISE, enabling intelligence and protection not possible with simple virtual firewall technology and which goes well beyond simple segmentation and ACLs.

VMShield 2.0 with V-Tracker utilizes hypervisor APIs to be VM aware and is also designed for compatibility with Citrix Xenserver and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Unlike conventional host-based solutions, stateful appliances and proprietary hardware solutions, VMShield 2.0 leverages Catbird’s fully SOA and cloud-based stateless architecture and is 100% plug-and-play, web-enabled, and architected to have minimal impact on the virtual environment itself. VMShield 2.0 is available as part of Catbird’s flagship V-Security 2.0. The company is a VMSafe partner.
