VirtualLogix Releases VLX Solution for Intel Atom Processor Z530 for Embedded Applications

VirtualLogix today announced the release of its VLX virtualization software solution for the Intel Atom processor Z530 platform for embedded applications. VLX enables faster, more secure integration of the Intel platform into connected embedded device designs such as in-vehicle infotainment systems and industrial automation and control applications.Support of the Intel Atom processor Z530 on VLX software will enable Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to:

  • Leverage the optimized low power technology and performance advancements of the processor without the operational and cost constraints associated with migration;
  • Convert and converge multiple OS environments on a common platform, reducing Bill of Materials;
  • Securely isolate the mission-critical execution domains from the less trustworthy ones; and
  • Innovate while meeting tight time-to-market deadlines, maintaining a flexible and scalable infrastructure that allows them to continue to evolve during this lifecycle without sacrificing performance or trust.

With the promise of a rapidly expanding ecosystem of mobile and connected applications once only available on the desktop, a number of fast-growing market segments are adopting embedded Internet devices. Viewing this market as an opportunity of greater than $10 billion by 2011, Intel predicts that an additional 15 billion devices will connect to the Internet by 2015.

VirtualLogix To Unveil Virtualized Android Phone Solution

VirtualLogix today announced the availability of the Android mobile phone environment on a range of 2G/3G cellular system solutions from ST-Ericsson, on a Linux single processor (ARM926) platform.

This solution relies on VirtualLogix’ VLX virtualization software to enable developers to create low cost, high volume phones that provide state-of-the-art user experience and services while effectively preserving the predictability and performance of communication and multimedia functionality. VirtualLogix will demonstrate the solution at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

VLX-patented, innovative virtualization technology brings the benefits of server-side virtualization functionality to mobile devices. Designed for real-time performance, VLX delivers a high performance communication capability which minimizes latency and communications between software running in separate containers on the same processor. Through a shared device framework, VLX provides an innovative and structured mechanism for sharing peripheral devices between different execution containers to enable multi-vendor support. VirtualLogix’ virtualization software allows developers to predictably add new functionality to mobile devices post-delivery, without compromising the initial configuration of any device.

Industry Moves: Glenda Dorchak Is VirtualLogix’ New CEO

VirtualLogix has announced the appointment of Glenda M. Dorchak as chief executive officer.

Ms. Dorchak comes to VirtualLogix from Intrinsyc Software International, a mobility software company, where she served as CEO and chairman. Prior to Intrinsyc, Ms. Dorchak worked with Intel Corporation from 2001 to 2006, holding positions including vice president and COO of the Intel Communications Group; vice president and general manager of Intel’s Consumer Electronics Group; and vice president and general manager of the Broadband Products Group.

Ms. Dorchak began her career with IBM Canada in Vancouver, BC in 1974; she worked at IBM in both Canada and the United States for more than 20 years, holding positions such as director of marketing for the Personal Systems Group in North America and director of PC Direct. She also worked as a director for two start-up ventures. Ambra U.S., an IBM company based in Raleigh, N.C., and Value America, where she became president as well as chairman and CEO.

VirtualLogix Now Supports All ARM Multicore Platforms

VirtualLogix today announced support for all multicore platforms based on the ARM11 MPCore and ARM Cortex-A9 multicore processors in addition to the ARM Cortex-A8 processor. In aligning itself with the latest hardware advances in multicore, VirtualLogix is simplifying the adoption of industry-standard processors while paving the way for virtualization in mobile devices.

Virtualization enables developers to combine different execution environments into single core or multicore platforms, separating hardware management from the application support functions of operating systems. When combined with the security, software design flexibility and cost savings of virtualization, ARM multicore processors can assist developers in shrinking their development costs and time, leveraging unlimited processing power and responding faster to new market requirements.

During today’s ARM European Technical Conference, VLX will demonstrate multiple operating systems including a standard T-Kernel real-time operating system (RTOS) and several instances of Linux. VirtualLogix VLX enables the ARM11 MPCore to securely support multiple, concurrent operating system environments by virtualizing the system so that each OS believes it has control of the full platform. As a result, no immediate changes to OS applications are required. VirtualLogix VLX’s support of the ARM Cortex-A8 and ARM Cortex-A9 processors enables VirtualLogix customers to better support design flexibility, power management and high-performance while maintaining low costs.

VirtualLogix VLX Now Supports Symbian OS

VirtualLogix today announced that its virtualization software product, VirtualLogix VLX, is the first to support Symbian OS, the market leading open operating system for advanced data-enabled mobile phones. VirtualLogix will demonstrate a prototype configuration of the Symbian OS running simultaneously with Linux on several mobile platforms at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, on 21-22 October 2008.

The first product to support Symbian OS on a virtualized mobile platform, VirtualLogix VLX provides new opportunities to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and semiconductor vendors to leverage the benefits of virtualization in their phone product designs. As a member of the Symbian Partner Network, VirtualLogix is committed to developing ground-breaking solutions based on the Symbian platform for the benefit of the mobile industry.
VirtualLogix VLX for mobile handsets separates hardware management and application management on mobile platforms, allowing an application running on the Symbian OS to access a peripheral device managed by another operating system kernel, such as Linux. With additional security for financial and other high-risk transactions, VirtualLogix VLX for Symbian permits handset manufacturers and wireless operators to deliver more reliable mobile phones with advanced features to the mass market.
