Xsigo Introduces First Adapter-Free Ethernet-based Virtual I/O

September 1, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Xsigo Systems yesterday announced a significant advancement in virtual I/O technology, simplifying and accelerating data center convergence – a key enabler of private cloud computing.

The company today released an Ethernet-based version of its award-winning Xsigo I/O Director, the industry’s first virtual I/O technology to leverage the standard Ethernet ports found on every x86 server.

The new technology helps customers drive enterprise efficiency – both OPEX and CAPEX – by connecting servers to every data center resource via a single conventional Ethernet server port. Unlike alternative approaches such as FCoE that require costly add-on cards, Xsigo’s new approach can deliver a complete end-to-end converged connectivity solution for less than $500 per server, or about 1/3 the cost of a converged network adapter (CNA) card alone.

Previously, infrastructure convergence meant purchasing add-on cards like FCoE adapters and PCIe link extenders that are disruptive to install, increase power consumption, and strain IT teams with laborious support tasks. Compared with these alternatives, Xsigo virtual I/O can save up to 80% on capital cost and avoid days or weeks of server downtime.

By connecting to servers via standard Ethernet ports, the new Xsigo I/O Director allows customers to:

  • Leverage the power of converged infrastructures with fast, simple and cost-effective deployment: Dynamically connect servers to as many as 64 isolated Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks with a single Ethernet cable to consolidate server connectivity and make private cloud architectures a reality.
  • Install on existing equipment without disruption: Companies can utilize the standard 1 gigabit and 10 gigabit Ethernet ports found in all x86 servers today – no special server hardware is required.
  • Spend less on new purchases: IT managers can save up to $5,600 per server by eliminating the converged network adapters required by other products.
  • Respond quickly to change: IT administrators can modify server connections in seconds via software rather than physically changing conventional adapters and cables, which can take hours or even days.

The new product installs in just minutes by connecting a server’s Ethernet port to the Xsigo I/O Director. Customers then install drivers to their server. Server I/O consolidation and management can begin immediately.

The Ethernet-based Xsigo I/O Director employs the same hardware and software platform as Xsigo’s proven InfiniBand-based I/O Director, which is deployed in more than 100 enterprise data centers worldwide and is demonstrated compatible with software and hardware from VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, Dell, HP, IBM, Hitachi, Oracle, EMC, NetApp, Cisco, Brocade and many others.

Available in September, the Ethernet-based Xsigo VP780 and VP560 I/O Directors are priced starting at $35,000.

Xsigo Integrates Virtual I/O Management to Enhance Microsoft System Center Experience

April 21, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Xsigo Systems, a data center I/O virtualization company, today announced the technology integration of the Xsigo VP780 I/O Director with the Microsoft System Center suite of IT management solutions.

The integrated solution works with System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) to help IT managers better monitor and control their server connectivity and resolve issues quickly without the need to physically enter a data center. With these tools, IT managers can monitor I/O resources and receive automated alerts in the event of an anomaly. Alerts may include PROtips that recommend corrective actions, which the IT manager can choose to automatically implement via the Microsoft SCVMM, thus minimizing exposure to downtime and maximizing management productivity.

The Xsigo I/O Director is purpose built to deliver dynamic server connectivity, allowing data center users to connect any server to any network or storage device in seconds, without the restrictions of I/O cards, cables and switch ports. Benefits of the solution include:

  • Dynamic I/O management: Deploy virtual Ethernet and Fibre channel connections to live servers
  • Scalable I/O: Up to 64 virtual NICs and HBAs per server with just one cable
  • Broadly interoperable: Proven with all leading X86 servers and FC, iSCSI, and NAS storage
  • Future-proof: Add new I/O capabilities without modifying server cards or cables

Xsigo I/O Director Is Now Citrix Ready

March 8, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Xsigo Systems today announced that its Xsigo I/O Director, an award-winning virtual I/O technology, has been verified as Citrix Ready.

The Citrix Ready program helps customers identify third-party solutions that are recommended to enhance virtualization, networking and cloud computing solutions from Citrix. The Xsigo I/O Director completed a rigorous verification process to ensure compatibility with Citrix XenServer, providing confidence in joint solution compatibility.

The Citrix Ready program makes it easy for customers to identify complementary products and solutions that can enhance Citrix environments. Customers can be confident that the Xsigo I/O Director has successfully passed a series of tests established by Citrix, and can be trusted to work effectively with Citrix XenServer, an enterprise-class, cloud-proven server virtualization platform that delivers the critical features of live migration and centralized multi-server management.

Virtualization projects that use Citrix XenServer products coupled with virtual I/O technologies, like the Xsigo I/O Director, further optimize efficiencies and realize additional cost-savings benefits. The Xsigo I/O Director is an enterprise-class solution that provides LAN and SAN connectivity for up to hundreds of Citrix XenServer hosts. Under software control, any XenServer host may be configured with access to any LAN or SAN — “virtually”. Because vNICs and vHBAs can be configured on-the-fly without a server reboot, the server’s network connectivity is highly flexible and reconfigurable.

As a result, Citrix XenServer combined with Xsigo virtual I/O allow customers to receive predictable application performance by: dynamically allocating server bandwidth; isolating resources by assigning connectivity to a specific server; and achieving QoS by controlling both network and storage bandwidth to specific virtual NICs and HBAs.

Xsigo Teams Up With Hitachi, CTC for I/O Virtualization

February 9, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Xsigo Systems today announced that Xsigo Systems Japan partnered with Itochu Techno-Solutions Corporation (CTC) and Hitachi to jointly offer I/O virtualization solutions to the Japanese market.

The companies offer immediate availability of a jointly developed solution that will allow enterprise customers to rapidly implement cloud computing environments. The combined solution includes Hitachi storage and integrated system management software; the Xsigo I/O Director; and pre-configured templates that facilitate deployment in as little as half the time required for custom made systems.

This joint offering is the first product of an ongoing agreement among the three companies to develop, sell and support solutions designed specifically to meet the needs of cloud infrastructures. CTC, a leading systems integrator, will develop and sell the solutions; Hitachi will provide storage, system operation management software and technical support; and Xsigo will provide I/O virtualization products and technical support. The three companies will also cooperate on marketing, technical verification and training.

Xsigo’s virtual I/O technology addresses multiple server I/O issues encountered in cloud computing deployments. When servers run large numbers of virtual machines, server I/O can become a bottleneck, slowing system response time and degrading memory and CPU utilization. Compared with alternative Ethernet approaches, Xsigo virtual I/O provides:

• Two to four time more bandwidth to each server, thus optimizing the use of server resources
• Dynamic bandwidth allocation that delivers performance on-demand to I/O connections
• Embedded quality of service features that enhance application performance by reducing the risk of I/O resource contention
Cloud architectures also require that all data center resources be available to whichever servers require those assets. Xsigo virtual I/O delivers the needed “any-to-any” connectivity while eliminating the constraints of traditional I/O cards and cabling.

The combined Xsigo/CTC/Hitachi solution facilitates rapid deployment of an enterprise cloud environment with pre-certified configurations that include Hitachi storage, integrated system management software, and the Xsigo I/O Director. Templates allow users to install the platform up to 2X more quickly than is possible with custom made systems. The fully virtualized infrastructure also reduces equipment costs by up to 50% when compared with traditional I/O.

Other solution benefits include:

• End-to-end support, from design, to installation, to operation
• Comprehensive training programs
