There We Go Again: EMC Shares Rise On Acquisition Rumors

This is one rumor that just keeps coming back: Reuters is reporting that EMC shares rose as much as 6.3 percent yesterday on market speculation that the world’s largest maker of corporate storage equipment could be acquired. The company stills holds a majority stake in virtualization juggernaut VMware.

Shares of EMC rose as high as $14.92 in trade on the New York Stock Exchange, before retreating to $14.75 in afternoon trading.

EMC spokesman Dave Farmer declined to comment, saying the company never responds to market rumors or speculation. Pacific Growth Equities analyst Kaushik Roy said the most likely company to be interested in buying EMC would be Cisco Systems. Last May, we reported on rumors of a possible merger.

A popular phrase says there is fire where there is smoke, but we’re getting a bit skeptical. These rumors have been floating for years now, and although a Cisco-EMC combo would seem like a pretty logical combination, you can ask yourself if it why a deal would be in the works now, when a merger or full acquisition should have already happened if both companies and their shareholders agreed.

DataSynapse Extends Dynamic Service Management Tools for VMware Infrastructure Support

Veeam Releases Backup 2.0 for VMware Infrastructure

Veeam Software today announced general availability of Veeam Backup 2.0, a product offering both backup and replication for virtual environments. Version 2.0 includes added functionality, as well as a new optimized backup engine that allows for up to five times faster backup and replication performance than the 1.0 version.

Major new features in Veeam Backup 2.0 include:

  • Five times faster — Veeam Backup 2.0 has a new optimized backup
    engine, which allows for up to five times faster backup and replication
    performance than the previous version.
  • Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) support — Veeam Backup 2.0
    leverages VSS to ensure consistent backup and recovery of VSS-aware
    applications, including Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft
    SQL Server.
  • ESXi support — Now customers can back up ESXi servers using VMware
    Consolidated Backup (VCB). File-level recovery is fully supported for
    guests running on ESXi, and full image restore is supported to ESX 3.x
    servers. These images can then be VMotioned to ESXi as needed.
  • Enhanced reporting and notification — Comprehensive real-time job
    statistics are available, including automated e-mail notification of backup
    job status, activity and performance details.
  • Backup portability — Veeam Backup users can now easily import backups
    made using previous versions of the software, or backups that have been
    archived to tape.
  • Support for third-party tape backup systems — Now users can specify a
    script to automatically run when the VMware backup is finished, initiating
    tape backups to begin.

Secerno Introduces Database Security Solution for Virtual Environments

Database security provider Secerno today announced the availability of its Secerno.SQL database activity monitoring and blocking solution as a virtualized appliance on the VMware platform. This, according to the company, marks the first availability of its appliance-based database protection in a virtualized environment, allowing enterprises the same database protection afforded by hardware yet with the utilisation, management and cost benefits of a virtualized application.

Secerno’s virtualized database protection product is powered by its patent-pending SynoptiQ technology. The company chose VMware’s technology platform based on its penetration into more than 20,000 corporate customers.

“This unique announcement comes at an exciting time for Secerno. We have just secured funding that allows us to respond to market opportunities and customer demand,” said Steve Hurn, CEO of Secerno. “In this case, we are bringing Secerno to a virtualised environment to offer organisations more variety in their deployments and reduce their overall costs in terms of resources and expenses. Xsigo Partners With Carahsoft to Bring I/O Virtualization to Government Agencies

Carahsoft, a government IT solutions provider, today announced that it has expanded its VMware Complementary Solutions team to include Xsigo Systems, which specializes in I/O virtualization.

Xsigo Systems is the latest vendor to be added to Carahsoft’s VMware Complementary Solutions Team, which provides public-sector buyers with one-stop shopping for related technologies that address agencies’ virtualization needs across servers, desktops, applications, networks, and storage.

“As VMware’s master government aggregator, Carahsoft offers proven expertise in virtualization technologies and in marketing and selling to the public sector marketplace,” said Jon Toor, vice president of marketing at Xsigo. “We look forward to working with the Carahsoft team to bring our innovative I/O technology to bear on the challenges facing IT managers interested in deploying VMware software faster, on more servers, and across more applications.”

VMware Planning Massive New Data Center In Washington

According to Data Center Knowledge, VMware is planning to locate a new data center in East Wenatchee (North Central Washington), leasing no less than 100,000 square feet of space in a new facility being built by Sabey Corporation on its Intergate.Columbia campus. VMware will be the biggest leaser by far; their data center will take up about two-thirds of the 189,000 square foot second building.

Company spokeswoman Melinda Marks said that VMware will use its new data center to expand research and development.
