VirtualLogix Releases VLX Solution for Intel Atom Processor Z530 for Embedded Applications

VirtualLogix today announced the release of its VLX virtualization software solution for the Intel Atom processor Z530 platform for embedded applications. VLX enables faster, more secure integration of the Intel platform into connected embedded device designs such as in-vehicle infotainment systems and industrial automation and control applications.Support of the Intel Atom processor Z530 on VLX software will enable Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to:

  • Leverage the optimized low power technology and performance advancements of the processor without the operational and cost constraints associated with migration;
  • Convert and converge multiple OS environments on a common platform, reducing Bill of Materials;
  • Securely isolate the mission-critical execution domains from the less trustworthy ones; and
  • Innovate while meeting tight time-to-market deadlines, maintaining a flexible and scalable infrastructure that allows them to continue to evolve during this lifecycle without sacrificing performance or trust.

With the promise of a rapidly expanding ecosystem of mobile and connected applications once only available on the desktop, a number of fast-growing market segments are adopting embedded Internet devices. Viewing this market as an opportunity of greater than $10 billion by 2011, Intel predicts that an additional 15 billion devices will connect to the Internet by 2015.

VirtualLogix VLX Now Supports Symbian OS

VirtualLogix today announced that its virtualization software product, VirtualLogix VLX, is the first to support Symbian OS, the market leading open operating system for advanced data-enabled mobile phones. VirtualLogix will demonstrate a prototype configuration of the Symbian OS running simultaneously with Linux on several mobile platforms at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, on 21-22 October 2008.

The first product to support Symbian OS on a virtualized mobile platform, VirtualLogix VLX provides new opportunities to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and semiconductor vendors to leverage the benefits of virtualization in their phone product designs. As a member of the Symbian Partner Network, VirtualLogix is committed to developing ground-breaking solutions based on the Symbian platform for the benefit of the mobile industry.
VirtualLogix VLX for mobile handsets separates hardware management and application management on mobile platforms, allowing an application running on the Symbian OS to access a peripheral device managed by another operating system kernel, such as Linux. With additional security for financial and other high-risk transactions, VirtualLogix VLX for Symbian permits handset manufacturers and wireless operators to deliver more reliable mobile phones with advanced features to the mass market.

VirtualLogix To Support Newest Multicore Association Specification

VirtualLogix has announced VLX real-time virtualization software support for the Multicore Association’s recently approved specification for Multicore Communications API (MCAPI).

MCAPI has been defined to flexibly support hundreds of processor cores and systems with tight memory constraints, fast task execution times, reliable on-chip interconnect and high system throughput requirements. By supporting the MCAPI specification within VLX, customers are able to apply this same flexibility and scalability to virtualized environments allowing them to easily migrate applications from a physical multicore system to one implemented with VirtualLogix VLX virtualization software via this industry accepted API.

VirtualLogix VLX real-time virtualization software helps users reduce bill of material costs by consolidating hardware, improving security and reducing overall power consumption. VirtualLogix offers extensive support for multicore technology, including its VLX for Network Infrastructure, which supports Intel® Core™ MicroArchitecture and Texas Instruments Multi-core Digital Signal Processors. VirtualLogix VLX Adds Support for Intel-Based Mobile Internet Devices

VirtualLogix (previous coverage) today announced that its VLX virtualization solution will be supporting the latest Intel Atom processor Z5XX series-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs).

Device makers using VLX on these MIDs can simplify hardware designs, reduce costs and enhance the end-user experience through improved quality of voice, multimedia services and stronger security capabilities. VirtualLogix VLX also offers complete power management support for virtualized environments, which reduces MIDs’ overall energy consumption.

The VLX hypervisor integrates transparently into a Windows or a Linux-based MID with no re-installation of the native operating system (OS) and no intrusion into the existing user environment. As a result, customers can use VLX’s flexible software architecture to securely separate critical applications while boosting the quality of service offerings. Additionally, by servicing the virtual appliances while the main application OS and associated hardware resources are not in use, VLX improves power consumption management.

The demand for next-generation devices is expanding. In a recent report, “Mobile Internet Device (MID) & Chip Market Opportunities,” Forward Concepts forecasted MID shipment growth from 305,000 units in 2008 to 39.6 million units in 2012.

VirtualLogix’ VLX for Network Infrastructure Now Available for Power Architectures

VirtualLogix today announced that its VLX for Network Infrastructure is now available for Power Architecture based processors. Using VLX virtualization software, multiple operating systems may run simultaneously on shared hardware, “enabling networking and telecommunication equipment manufacturers to inject new functionalities into existing product lines and extend product lifecycles – while slicing costs by consolidating existing products into a multifunction system”.

According to the company, VLX for Network Infrastructure, supporting Power Architecture, speeds the adoption of rich open source software by combining Linux with real-time operating systems on shared hardware without compromising the system’s deterministic realtime behavior.

“This seamless integration is due to the advanced capabilities of VLX that allow multiple guest operating systems to run simultaneously in a number of different configurations based on performance and security criteria. As a result, users can extend the lifetime of existing designs by adding extra partitions to run upgraded or new features and consolidate functionality. By simplifying the hardware design, organizations reduce bill-of-materials and development costs, and reduce power consumption.”

New VLX for Network Infrastructure, supporting Power Architecture, features include:

  • Real-Time Virtualization – allows developers to run a combination of guest operating systems including Linux and a customer’s choice of real-time OS while keeping the real-time performance characteristics of their overall system.
  • Consolidation of hardware platforms – developers can consolidate Linux and mission-critical environments onto a single hardware platform, reducing system complexity and product bill-of-material costs.
  • Introduces support for Freescale’s popular PowerQUICC processors – includes support for the Integrated Communications and Host Processors from Freescale as well as the 32-bit PowerPC microprocessors from IBM.
