Wyse Starts Shipping Management Software For Cloud Client Computing Environments

Wyse has begun shipping its self-configuring client technology for the cloud and Wyse-enhanced Microsoft Windows Embedded virtual desktop environments. The solution is called Wyse Configuration Manager (WCM), previewed earlier this year as Wyse “Project Pyramid.”

With the introduction of WCM, Wyse offers automatic client management across all of its operating systems (Wyse Zero, Wyse ThinOS, Linux, and Windows Embedded).

Wyse Configuration Manager allows IT departments to auto-configure thin clients based on Wyse-enhanced Windows Embedded Standard 7. By automating the deployment of Windows Embedded Standard 7 thin clients throughout a private cloud, WCM offers multiple benefits to organizations.

With WCM, client devices are updated to the latest configuration automatically on startup or user logon. IT determines the desired configuration, and WCM automatically does the rest, with no imaging or re-booting required. WCM works with Microsoft write-filter technology, so it’s secure. Users can be stationary, mobile, office or home-based.

Wyse Configuration Manager 1.0 is available immediately and is free to all Wyse customers that are currently using Windows Embedded Standard 7.

WCM for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 will be available later this year.

Entire Line Of HP Thin Clients Now Certified for VMware View

HP has announced that its entire line of thin clients is now certified for VMware View, making the products easier for customers to deploy in VMware environments. The certification includes rigorous testing and quality assurance with VMware View for enhanced reliability and ease of deployment.

HP is among the first in the industry to offer customers Linux thin clients certified for VMware View Manager, an enterprise desktop management server that enables IT administrators to quickly provision and tightly control user access. Additionally, HP is currently the only vendor to receive View Manager certification for Windows CE.

HP offers an extensive lineup of Windows and Linux-based thin clients suited for VMware View deployments that deliver a range of performance and features to support a wide variety of user needs – from basic data entry to advanced 3-D imaging and remote collaboration.

Windows-based HP thin clients certified for VMware View Manager, as well as HP ThinPro Linux products are available now at a starting price of $299. HP ThinConnect Linux-based thin clients certified for VMware View Manager are expected to be available Jan. 26, starting at $249.

Devon IT Installs Thin Client / Virtualization Test Center In China

Devon IT announced it will launch a thin client and virtualization test center at its China headquarters in Beijing. Customers can test the latest Devon IT thin clients working with virtualization software, mirroring the company’s Server-Desktop Solution Center at its U.S. headquarters.

For the first time, IT personnel in China will be able to test Devon IT’s latest thin client technologies against traditional PC environments. The test center will feature Devon IT’s newly launched green TC2 thin client series and the SafeBook LVO, which is built on the Lenovo ThinkPad and compatible with all Lenovo docking stations and accessories. Virtualization software from VMware and server solutions from IBM will round out the testing facility. In addition, the HC10 workstation blade will be available for demos in their facility. The HC10 is a remote workstation blade that delivers breakthrough graphics performance and a full PC experience. It connects to the TC10/CP20 using the PC-over-IP protocol, a technology that changes the desktop computing model by enabling desktop consolidation benefits to be realized across the enterprise.

Sun Microsystems Nearly Doubles Sun Ray Shipments

Sun Microsystems today announced the company nearly doubled shipments of its Sun Ray thin clients during the fourth quarter of Sun’s 2008 fiscal year, compared to the third quarter of its 2008 fiscal year.

Sun claims that the Sun Ray unit shipments are growing faster than the thin client industry at large, underscoring the increased appeal thin client and desktop virtualization solutions are experiencing among businesses and organizations. Contributing to this growth is strong market demand for Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Software 2.0, which now ships on approximately 25% of Sun Ray units since being introduced in March 2008, in addition to enabling customers to display Solaris, Windows or Linux desktops on the same device.

Sun Ray virtual display clients, Sun Ray Sofware and Sun VDI Software 2.0 are key components of Sun’s broad desktop virtualization offering, which are a set of core desktop technologies and solutions within Sun’s xVM virtualization portfolio.

Sun offers a complete desktop-to-datacenter virtualization product portfolio and comprehensive set of virtualization service offerings to help customers deploy new services faster, maximize the utilization of system resources, and more easily monitor and manage virtualized environments. IGEL’s Range Of Thin Clients Supports Citrix XenDesktop

IGEL Technology announced the broadest range of thin client models supporting the important Citrix XenDesktop virtualization standard. With all of its 22 (!) models now supporting Citrix XenDesktop, IGEL claims its unique digital services approach allows organizations to offer the best user experience combined with robust desktop resilience and powerful remote management.

The IGEL Technology range includes traditional desktop designs, PC upgrade cards, 17” and 19” LCD integrated units, wireless tablets and quad screen units. The variety of choice allows organizations of all types to deploy the Citrix XenDesktop virtualization solution to almost any part of the business, including office workers, mobile users, space constrained point-of-sale areas and multi-screen environments such as dealing rooms.

The flexibility of the IGEL approach allows organizations to pick and choose the best digital services to deliver a true PC experience, including web browser, Java, SAP GUI, PDF, terminal emulation and VoIP. This also provides desktop resilience if the virtual PC connection should be lost, for example, users can access email via the local web client or SAP via the native SAP GUI in this event.

VMware Combines VDI with Sun Microsystems’ Sun Ray Software, Adds Certification Program For Thin Clients And Professional Services Suite

VMware issued three press releases today. One is about the company’s all new certification program to help vendors certify thin client devices for VMware VDI. From the press release:

“The new VMware certification program will enable VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure customers to choose from a wide variety of thin client devices officially certified for VMware products. VMware’s open standards ensure that thin client devices running on multiple platforms will deliver a consistent experience for virtual desktop users. Organizations choose what type of device suits their business needs and are not tied to a specific device that will only support VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.”

The company also unveiled a new integrated desktop solution offering “superior performance”, leveraging VMware’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure platform with Sun Microsystems’ Sun Ray Software and virtual display clients.

This model (VDI) streamlines desktop management while reducing desktop TCO, increasing IT’s control, improving security of data and enhancing user experience, flexibility, and productivity. Independent customer testing has found that the integrated VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Sun Ray Software solution delivered consistently better performance than competing display protocols. The solution utilizes Sun’s Appliance Link Protocol (ALP), which outperforms other display protocols when used to deliver virtual desktops over networks with high latency. Customer tests show dramatic increases in performance when using VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure with ALP to deliver complete desktop environments in a WAN deployment.

The most interesting news as far as we’re concerned, was the jumpstart of a number of professional services VMware announced to aid customer in implementing virtual desktop environments. From the release:

VMware Professional Services provides proven best practices and guidance from experts in virtual infrastructure environments to maximize a customer’s investment in VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. VMware Infrastructure methodology takes into account the complete lifecycle of a customer engagement: assess, plan, build and manage. The new services, tailored to customer experience and requirements, include:

  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Jumpstart
    VMware Professional Services delivers an on-site proof of concept, a fast and convenient way to train staff on setup and explore specific considerations unique to the customer environment. During a Jumpstart, a VMware Certified Professional will train up to five staff in setting up VMware products, provide knowledge transfer and discuss best practices of deployment.
  • Application Virtualization Jumpstart
    Through application virtualization, organizations can package and deploy applications more easily, faster, and without conflict. VMware Professional Services offers customers and partners expert training on running any version of any application on a single OS without conflict.
  • Plan and Design for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Application Virtualization
    The Plan and Design engagement begins with assessment and analysis of the customer’s key objectives and existing infrastructure. VMware Professional Services then builds a comprehensive blueprint for the VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and/or Application Virtualization deployment, including key documents needed to successfully manage the environment on an on-going basis.
  • Remote Office/Branch Office (ROBO) Services Acceleration Kit
