$500 Million For XenSource, Where Did All The Money Go?

May 17, 2008 by Kris Buytaert 1 Comment

Over at Cambridge Cluster , Philip Baddeley wonders where the $500 million that Citrix paid for Xensource has gone.

In August of last year, Citrix and XenSource agreed on an acquisition price of $500 million in a mixture of cash and Citrix stock. The deal came trough in late October of 2007. Now 7 months later, Philip wonders where all the money went.

“You don’t hear as much about Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sevin Rosen as you used to. Kleiner Perkins is busy investing in anything but consumer Internet companies while Sevin Rosen decided against raising another fund last year. But, they are still cashing checks. The pair invested $6 million in a first round investment in January 2005 into. That’s a big hit for the duo. Other beneficiaries include Accel Partners, Ignition Partners and New Enterprise Associates.”

Philip mainly wonders how much of that money stayed in Cambridge:

“Was Cambridge Enterprise involved? It would have ranked as one of their top investments. If not, why not? Why was such a good deal funded outside of the Cambridge Cluster? Did any of the Cambridge Angels or the other groups invest? There is no trace of XenSource on the Cambridge Evening News website. It would make a great Equity Fingerprint and case study but I guess it was registered in Delaware and so all the details are not available. Hopefully the Cambridge Cluster has a couple or ten of new angels to keep turning the wheels. Just think what the Cambridge Cluster could have done with $500 million …”

Obviously the University of Cambridge played a big role in the conception of Xen. But did it get a return on its investment?

Interesting question.

KVM Sponsor Qumranet Ships Solid ICE

May 1, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

KVM sponsor Qumranet launched (PDF) its long awaited desktop virtualization solution yesterday, just weeks before Citrix launches XenDesktop. Solid ICE (Independent Computing Environment) is a hosted desktop virtualization product that promises desktop-like performance with support for multiple monitors, bi-directional audio and video, streaming video and USB support.

Qumranet

From the press release:

By centrally hosting desktops in KVM on servers in the corporate data center, Solid ICE (Independent Computing Environment) gives IT administrators greater control over desktop image management, provisioning management, policy enforcement and security. Solid ICE also offers IT managers easier access to remote desktops to provide maintenance and support, as well as instant, inherent disaster recovery. In addition, businesses deploying a green IT strategy can achieve a savings of up to two thirds on electric power with Solid ICE.

The company said it prices the product by concurrent virtual machines, $200 per concurrent virtual machine which includes one monitor support and one SPICE display. Qumranet also offers a 30-day trial on its web site, although it seems to have messed up the spelling for the product name a bit 🙂

IGEL Delivers Broad Range of Thin Clients With Citrix XenDesktop Support

April 30, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

IGEL Technology, the German company which bills itself as the world’s third largest thin client vendor, today announced the broadest range of thin client models supporting the Citrix XenDesktop virtualization standard. With all of its 22 models now supporting Citrix XenDesktop, IGEL’s digital services approach allows organizations “to offer the best user experience combined with robust desktop resilience and powerful remote management”.

Igel

The IGEL Technology range includes traditional desktop designs, PC upgrade cards, 17? and 19? LCD integrated units, wireless tablets and quad screen units.

“The arguments for virtualizing PCs are becoming overwhelming,” said Dirk Dördelmann, technical director, IGEL Technology. “Applications can now be migrated to the data center without compatibility issues. The access device choice is so broad that organizations can place them almost anywhere, and the process of deployment is no more complex than plugging in a telephone. IGEL offers the end user a thin client experience that is just like a PC but without the hassles, and we are excited to now offer this capability in conjunction with our long-term partner Citrix.”

IGEL Technology’s range of Citrix XenDesktop compatible thin clients will be on display at the upcoming Citrix Synergy event in Houston, Texas from May 20-23, 2008; and the Citrix iForum08 event in Edinburgh, Scotland, from June 9-11, 2008.

EMA Research on Virtualization: VMware Still Leading The Pack, Microsoft And Citrix Following Closely

April 17, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), a US-based IT management research and consulting firm, today announced the release of its latest research report titled, “Virtualization and Management: Trends, Forecasts and Recommendations.”

EMA

“The promise of IT virtualization continues to be significant as it rightfully gains traction across servers, desktops, applications, networks, storage and more,” said research director Andi Mann. “This latest research report identifies what is really happening within the exploding virtualization marketplace, the impact it is having on IT professionals and the technology options that are available today.”

When looking across all virtualization technologies, Enterprise Management Associates’ research shows that VMware still has the highest overall market penetration. However, Microsoft continues to grow its market share and — even before the formal release of Hyper-V — is within 10 percent of VMware’s lead. Citrix also poses a threat, coming in at 20 percent behind VMware, again with major product yet to be formally released.

Mann believes desktop virtualization will show the strongest growth of any virtualization technology during the next one to two years. However, the overall virtualization market will continue to be very healthy because, as this research reveals, enterprises are seeing substantial benefits in cost reduction, server consolidation, security improvement and more from virtualization technologies. The EMA study also clearly shows that virtualization is not just a test and development tool, finding that up to 75 percent of all enterprises are now using virtualization for production use cases — indicating a steady increase in outcomes and confidence since 2006.

As virtualization proliferates, it will continue to deliver many valuable outcomes. However, most companies will face multiple barriers to success. Enterprise Management Associates’ research shows that the largest challenges facing successful virtualization deployments lie with “human issues.” Key among these are the unique political challenges that virtualization creates as a result of sharing data center resources, shifting responsibility and functionality of desktops or changing the way departments access applications, storage and networks.

In addition, companies face a potential skills crisis as they find it harder to attract and retain virtualization resources. In fact, enterprises have seen a 25 percent decrease in their ability to manage virtual environments adequately with the skills they have in place.

Complexity is also a critical issue in virtualization. EMA finds that the vast majority of organizations implement virtualization on multiple platforms, using multiple technologies, from multiple vendors — adding multiple layers of complexity onto already complex physical systems. This study also shows convincingly that virtualization will not overtake existing architectures at least through 2010. “For the vast majority of enterprises, virtualization will coexist with physical deployments for the foreseeable future, so complexity will continue to be a major headache,” said Mann.

“The key to success is to approach virtualization as a strategy, not just a series of projects, and to approach it with more realistic expectations,” said Mann, “Companies need to adjust their goals, and find ways to deploy and manage virtualization in more effective ways. This report will help them to do exactly that.”

Wyse Launches New Class of Desktop Appliance Solutions Designed for Citrix XenDesktop

April 15, 2008 by Robin Wauters 1 Comment

Wyse Technology today announced that it will bring to market a new class of appliances, specifically designed for the new Citrix XenDesktop product line (due to be unveiled soon at Citrix Synergy 2008). By combining Wyse’s new appliances with the desktop delivery capabilities found in Citrix XenDesktop, enterprises will “have a comprehensive solution for delivering desktops to office workers with the best user experience, simplest administration and lowest cost of ownership”, according to the press release.

Wyse

“The Wyse Viance family of devices provide unique features beyond what’s currently available that deliver easy set-up time and management, fast performance, rich multimedia experience, broad USB peripheral compatibility, multi-display support, and quick access to online end-user support. In addition, these appliances only use 13 to 19 watts of power making them a very “green” solution.”

“Wyse has partnered with Citrix in the past to sell thin clients for Terminal Services and Presentation Server, but now a new, bigger opportunity has emerged” said John Abbott, chief analyst of the 451 Group. “Desktop virtualization all but forces an appliance model onto the desktop — users typically aren’t keen to control a virtual PC image with a physical PC. Citrix and Wyse are in a good position to capitalize on the fast-growing VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) sector and push thin clients into the broader marketplace for the first time.”

Entry-level pricing of the new Wyse Viance appliances starts at $399.00 with volume shipments beginning this quarter. Existing Wyse thin clients that support XenDesktop are available today with prices starting at $299.00.
