Kaseya Announces Upgraded Backup / Disaster Recovery And Endpoint Security Modules

December 3, 2008 by Robin Wauters 1 Comment

Kaseya announced today the release of two new versions of its popular Kaseya Endpoint Security (KES) and Backup and Disaster Recovery (BU-DR) modules. The new releases offer significant automation capabilities for fast deployment and efficient utilization of IT resources.

The endpoint security module provides integration for unified deployment and management of anti-virus, anti-spyware and rootkit protection for Microsoft OS-based servers, workstations and mobile computers. KES is integrated at both the user interface and database levels with Kaseya’s complete suite of IT automation software, providing for seamless operation and eliminating complexity.
This allows users to automate IT management and have full visibility of all deployment, configuration, status and operations of endpoint security, all within Kaseya’s unified and consistent Web-based console.
The new backup and disaster recovery functionality now includes Incremental Forever and Synthetic Full Backups for efficient offsite replication and user-defined archival capabilities. In addition, new features for Instant Virtualization allow any backup to be converted to a VMware, ESX or Virtual PC virtual disk remotely and automatically within minutes. This is an enormous time-saver that significantly eases the restoration process. With just a few clicks, customers can instantly have a key system up and running in a virtual environment. This makes it possible to recover files and folders in real time to an existing machine, to a “bare metal” machine, or to a virtual machine.

Kaseya Endpoint Security 2.0 and Backup and Disaster Recovery 3.0 are available immediately.

Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition Focuses On Virtualization

October 31, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

On Thursday, Ubuntu Linux distribution organization Canonical flipped the switch on free public downloads of Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition and Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition, both of which will be supported for 18 months.

Improvements to Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition focus on virtualization, Java development, system management, and email security. It includes a Virtual Machine builder with which developers can construct customized virtual images, which is based on the most recent version of the Just Enough Operating System (JeOS).

Java developers now have the option of using Apache Tomcat 6.0 and OpenJDK, and ClamAV and SpamAssassin have been added to the main repository to handle anti-spam and anti-virus tasks.

Earlier this week in a conference call with reporters, Mark Shuttleworth, leader of Ubuntu distribution organization Canonical, said the company has yet to turn a profit, but he plans to continue funding it for an additional three to five years.

Datatrend Technologies Debuts “Virtualization-In-A-Box”

October 27, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Datatrend Technologies introduced a new virtualization appliance that helps clients build an affordable computing infrastructure using the IBM BladeCenter server. Datatrend made the announcement yesterday during a “Road 2 Virtualization Road Show” event hosted in Minneapolis, MN.

Datatrend has designed an all-in-one solution that comes complete with the server hardware, software, consulting services and comprehensive support needed to jumpstart a server and / or client virtualization initiative. Virtualization-in-a-Box can help clients more efficiently manage and consolidate volumes of business data with the benefits of increased security, flexibility and improved disaster recovery.

Datatrend customers will receive all of the benefits associated with a VMware Virtual Infrastructure solution, plus an easy to administer, space saving server, storage  and optional client desktop solution that comes complete with higher availability, lower power  & cooling costs and improved security.

Designed with the highest quality, most reliable components, Virtualization-in-a-Box is built on the IBM BladeCenter, the industry leading solution for running business-critical workloads. Integrated with the BladeCenter hardware is VMware VI3 plus other virtual enablement tools which provide increased server utilization, along with improved performance, increased security, and reduced cost and complexity.

This solution can scale up to 190 virtual servers (or even more clients) all in one box and comes pre-configured with 1.8 TB of virtualized storage with room to expand up to 3.6 TB. The Datatrend solution makes virtualization easy, and is pre-packaged with server consolidation  & training services and three years of support and maintenance.

The solution comes preconfigured, tested and validated making it an ideal solution for customers looking to standardize hardware platforms and simplify the roll-out process across many distributed locations. The all-in-one design is also a great fit for small-and-medium-sized businesses looking to virtualize smaller server environments or add storage capacity where space is limited.

Clavister Releases Secure OS CorePlus 9.10, Adds Virtualization Support

October 13, 2008 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

IP-based security and unified threat management (UTM) specialist Clavister has recently launched the latest version of its network security operating system. Clavister CorePlus 9.10 delivers support for virtualization and improved traffic optimization to its UTM security portfolio.

Companies now have the option to buy Clavister Security Gateways supporting virtualization using VMware ESXi 3 as a virtual appliance or as conventional hardware or software appliances to suit their networks requirements.

The continued growth of enterprise applications such as VoIP, and the addition of them to the network, means that companies are experiencing increased levels of traffic on the network. This introduces new security challenges and can lead to uncontrolled bandwidth consumption. Clavister’s new operating system brings with it a number of features for traffic optimization including gigabit traffic shaping, IDP traffic shaping, route load balancing and SLB server monitoring.

In addition to traffic management and optimization and support for virtualization CorePlus 9.10 also features:

  • VoIP/SIP enhancements – A number of new features gives much more flexibility in terms of network setups, such as SIP proxy placement, SIP extensions and security enhancements.
  • SSL/TLS termination – Supports TLS/SSL termination and the transformation of HTTPS traffic to HTTP traffic, providing the possibility to perform deep content inspection of the traffic. It also offers a single source for managing all certificates for all servers.
  • LDAP authentication – Provides support for direct connectivity between Clavister Security Gateways and LDAP directory services such as Microsoft Active Directory.

CorePlus 9.10 is available through the Clavister Partner Network and via their website. Existing customers with an active Clavister Software Maintenance Agreement will be able to upgrade for free.

CorePlus 9.10 is an important upgrade to the core operating system that lies at the heart of Clavister’s product portfolio that can be configured and fine tuned to produce exactly the right level of protection.
