Wyse and NetSupport Partner for Client Virtualization and Management Infrastructure for Education

November 4, 2009 by Robin Wauters 1 Comment

Wyse today announced an alliance with NetSupport for its NetSupport School software, the class leading software solution that provides teachers with the ability to instruct, monitor and interact with their students.

By integrating NetSupport School, Wyse’s desktop provisioning software and energy efficient zero clients, educational institutions are able to deploy more effective Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) infrastructures for learning and teaching.  Wyse and NetSupport will work together to deliver the most optimized ICT environment for primary and secondary schools, as well as universities and colleges.

Wyse thin computing software and devices are in use today by thousands of schools, colleges and universities worldwide.  The company’s Wyse WSM provisioning software delivers a computer infrastructure that provides a reliable experience to teachers, an engaging experience for students, while still offering the same functionality as traditional PCs.  From an ICT support point of view, Wyse WSM provides classroom computers that are automatically updated and maintained centrally and supports all of the latest curriculum software including multimedia applications and peripherals such as whiteboards, webcams and projectors.

When combined with Wyse desktop or mobile zero client devices, education institutions can create a more efficient learning environment and not just in terms of teaching, but also in regards to energy consumption and noise levels. With no moving parts, zero clients are silent in operation and with a typical energy consumption of 7-15 watts, they use as little as 10% of the energy consumed by a regular PC. The lower energy use also results in lower heat emissions keeping classrooms cooler.

NetSupport School classroom management software helps teachers keep students on task and focused on the applications and content relevant to the area they are studying. Teachers and Technicians have access to dedicated consoles that allows them to monitor students’ computers or terminals and both deliver classroom instruction and control student activity. Through the software teachers can deliver rich multimedia presentations, show their screen to all students, control Internet, application and printer usage as well as deliver instant surveys and full interactive testing. The latest version of NetSupport School also provides full Audio Monitoring and Language lab functionality as well as new electronic journals for each student, providing a full record of all activity undertaken during the class.

3Leaf Systems And Its Sttrategy to Enable the “Dynamic Data Center”

November 4, 2009 by Robin Wauters 1 Comment

3Leaf Systems today marked a significant milestone as it announced a disruptive set of technologies that enable the “Dynamic Data Center”.

The company launched the x86-based Dynamic Data Center – Server for the AMD Opteron family of processors and outlined plans for supporting the Intel QPI 1.1 interconnect beginning with the Sandy Bridge processors. With an innovative product portfolio, world-class partners, and strong financial backing, 3Leaf Systems is helping original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and enterprises to exploit industry standards in brand new markets and make data center infrastructures more agile and scalable while dramatically reducing both capital and operational costs.

3Leaf Systems technologies will enable enterprises to treat x86 servers as building blocks and coalesce them into contiguous pools of CPU, memory, and storage that can span across multiple physical machines and be allocated or de-allocated as needed. This will enable customers to build dynamic “systems” of any configuration, and flexibly push and pull specified resources across silos on-the-fly and without rebooting.

In the dynamic world of cloud computing, flexibility and agility are essential for increasing revenue, maximizing return on investment, and delivering against service-level agreements. 3Leaf Systems technologies enable the deployment of a massively-scalable cloud infrastructure based on cost-optimized building blocks while also enabling service providers to defragment and thus monetize unused server capacity.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are seeking innovative ways to differentiate offerings while keeping R&D costs at bay and addressing new markets such as cloud computing, data warehousing and data mining, high-performance computing, and social media. By integrating 3Leaf Systems technologies, OEMs can expand their offerings, tap into new market opportunities or fill a current product gap. In the process, they are able to achieve significantly lower costs, faster time-to-market, and the possibility to serve both the Intel and AMD x86 markets.

In addition to the traditional enterprise, eCommerce and social media companies, 3Leaf Systems technologies are also revitalizing the High-Performance Computing community. HPC customers today face challenges in flexibility, cost management, software optimization time, and realized performance as a fraction of peak speeds. 3Leaf Systems Dynamic Data CenterServer™ brings back to the HPC community powerful shared memory systems, but with the industry-standard hardware and software that are critical customer requirements.

The 3Leaf Systems technology is ideal for Multi-Disciplinary Science since it can be used simultaneously as both a distributed memory cluster and a shared memory system. Customers can run existing or even old applications and achieve higher productivity when creating new parallel applications. At the same time, they can take better advantage of their investment in memory (sometimes more than 50 percent of the system cost) by minimizing unnecessary data replication and eliminating memory waste. Such a “distributed-and-shared” system architecture also minimizes system management costs by providing a single management image.

3Leaf Systems is committed to working with global technology leaders to drive a common vision for the dynamic data center. Working with AMD, LSI, and Intel has been essential for the company’s progress and its ability to support 100 percent of the x86 industry-standard server market.

StarWind Releases 5.0 iSCSI SAN Software

November 4, 2009 by Robin Wauters 2 Comments

StarWind Software, a provider of storage virtualization and a pioneer in iSCSI storage, today announced a release of the fifth-generation of its flagship product StarWind 5.0, an iSCSI SAN software platform which turns any industry-standard x86 or x64 Windows server into a fail-safe, fault-tolerant storage that will be continuously available even in the event of failure.

With this new release, StarWind redefines high availability storage by offering this enterprise-class technology, which was previously only available in high-end storage products, to small and midsize companies at an affordable price. This combination of true active-active high availability and affordable price is unprecedented.

StarWind’s true active-active high availability (HA) architecture provides continuous and non-disruptive access to storage in the event of failure by synchronously mirroring data between two active storage appliances, or nodes, in real time. This technology is important to IT professionals because it eliminates a single point of failure. If a disk, power or even an entire storage node fails, the redundant storage node will take over and will continue actively operating without any disruption, ensuring that storage is available and accessible on the network.

StarWind 5.0 Key Features:

· Synchronous Mirroring with Automatic Failover: mirrors data in real time across a storage cluster, ensuring that storage is continuously available in the event of failure.
· Failback with Fast Synchronization: re-synchronizes data back to the original storage node and restores it to a previous live state before failure.
· Remote Replication across a WAN: replicates data to a remote location. allowing multi-site disaster recovery in the event of a disaster at the primary site.
· CDP & Snapshots: captures instant, point-in-time volume images, allowing a user to rollback and recover an entire volume or individual files and folders.
· Server clustering: supports Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V, VMware ESX and vSphere 4.0 and other applications.
· Redesigned User Interface: allows IT professionals to easily manage all storage from a central management console built on the same tree structure used in Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere.

StarWind HA is available immediately from StarWind and from authorized resellers in North America, Europe and Asia.

Prices range from $395.00 for the basic StarWind Server iSCSI Target to $5,995, an all-inclusive license for the High Availability edition that includes 2 active-active storage nodes with unlimited capacity and with all enterprise-class features. All licenses include a 1st year of StarWind Premium Support and Maintenance.

LineSider Debuts OverDrive, A Network Services Virtualization Platform

October 29, 2009 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

LineSider Technologies has announced OverDrive, a network services virtualization platform that enables enterprises and service providers to automate the provisioning and deployment of network services in cloud computing environments.

OverDrive is a software network virtualization solution that automates and orchestrates end-to-end service delivery by virtualizing discreet network services in response to changes occurring to dynamic resources such as users, applications, virtual compute, physical compute and storage. As resources are moved or changed, OverDrive automatically modifies and changes the underlying network infrastructure based on business policies that define the relationship between users, computing, and network resources.

Datacenters, users and applications have all become fluid elements in this new flexible computing model however networks were not designed for this new dynamic reality. They are still static. Every time an application, computer or storage resource changes in the virtual datacenter, there needs to be manual intervention to provision network services or repair broken security and access models. Without OverDrive a single request to move a critical application to a new physical or virtual location could easily require hundreds of separate device-level configuration updates that could take weeks to implement manually across a fully deployed network or data center. With OverDrive the entire process takes seconds, and more importantly the security models are still intact.

OverDrive orchestrates real-time automation and control of network services including access and security across both the logical and physical network based on business policies. Business policies are automatically translated into device-level configurations that dynamically create and adjust network services in real-time as changes in the dynamic computing environment occur.

Key features include:

· Business Policy Driven – OverDrive orchestrates real-time automation and control of network services based on business policies that define the relationship between users, computing, and network resources.
· Automates Device Level Configurations – Business policies are automatically translated into device-level configurations that dynamically create and adjust network services including access and security, in real-time, across both physical and virtual network devices as changes in the dynamic computing environment.
· Automates Network Service Delivery – OverDrive policies control and define the underlying network infrastructure services that provide end user access and security to both physical and virtual resources. These services include: Routing, VPN, Switching, VLAN, Firewall Ports and Protocols, ACL (firewall and switch), DNS, DHCP, Security (ACL / 802.1x), Remote Access / Mobile User, Identity Based Network Access Control
· Ensures Secure Access – OverDrive ensures that underlying access and security parameters remain in effect and will automatically notify administrators if a defined access or security policy is violated.
· Identifies Potential Conflicts – OverDrive understands the complex interdependencies between resources in both physical and virtual computing environments and alerts the network administrator about configuration, access, and security conflicts prior impacting the production environment.
· Ensures Compliance – OverDrive provides a complete solution that satisfies multiple audit controls and reporting requirements for Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPPA, PCI and other federal mandates in regulated industries.
· Integrates into Existing Network Support Platforms
