i365 Debuts Cross-Platform, Cloud-Connected Data Protection Appliance Solution With Microsoft

April 21, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

i365, a Seagate Company, has announced EVault for Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager, a collaboration with Microsoft that has resulted in the first and only heterogeneous disk-based data protection solution that allows IT managers to extend Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2010 across non-Microsoft platforms and into the Cloud, using i365’s EVault data protection software and Cloud-Connected storage solutions infrastructure.

EVault for DPM on Dell hardware is scheduled to be available in June and can be ordered today through i365 and Microsoft channel partners.

In mixed IT environments with Microsoft operating systems and applications as well as data on other platforms, customers have been struggling to find the best way to protect all of their company-critical data with a single solution. Until now, no backup product offered DPM, with its protection for Microsoft servers, applications and desktops, combined with heterogeneous support for non-Microsoft platforms and the option to protect data in the Cloud. EVault for Data Protection Manager is the only product that can meet all of these needs.

EVault for DPM is an all-in-one backup and recovery appliance that combines DPM’s unified data protection for Microsoft Windows servers and applications with EVault’s robust protection for non-Microsoft platforms and cloud connectivity. With EVault for DPM, customers can send both their DPM and EVault-protected backup data to the i365 Cloud and get offsite disaster recovery protection quickly and economically. The optional Cloud-Connected storage service includes efficient and secure replication of the backup data over the Internet to the Cloud, and maintains backup copies of data in the i365 Cloud. The i365 Cloud is supported by geographically dispersed, SAS70 Type II-certified data centers, staffed by a team of experts and employing state-of-the-art encryption protocols, storage technologies, and redundancy practices to ensure ironclad protection of data.

Customers have several configurations to choose from — each with all the hardware, software and support they need. The hardware will be powered by Dell technology and will ship factory-installed with both DPM and EVault Software with a common user interface to help customers monitor their entire heterogeneous environment and initiate complex tasks with ease. It also includes helpful wizards that will guide customers through the setup process. EVault for DPM configurations will start at $9,995.

Extending Seagate’s long standing relationship with Dell, i365/Seagate is pleased to include in today’s news that EVault for DPM will be based on a solid foundation of Dell server and storage platforms. The appliance-based model makes it easy to purchase, deploy and manage i365 solutions with special bundling, streamlined licensing, and Dell support backing up i365’s customer support worldwide.

Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager is a member of the Microsoft System Center suite of management products, designed to help IT Professionals manage their Windows environment. DPM 2010 delivers unified data protection for Windows servers and clients as a best-of-breed backup and recovery solution from Microsoft, for Windows environments. DPM 2010 provides the best protection and most supportable restore scenarios for Windows environments to disk, tape and cloud — in a scalable, reliable, manageable and cost-effective way.

Salesforce + VMware = VMforce?

April 14, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Software powerhouses Salesforce.com and VMware will debut a cloud computing product later this month. The companies have created a website VMforce.com to tease customers about their upcoming collaborative effort, but they are saying very little else until 27 April.

From The Register:

Salesforce.com is the world’s biggest software-as-a-service provider, while VMware is at the top of the virtualisation pack. So such a marriage between the two companies is hardly surprising.

But what’s less clear is what we can expect from VMforce. It could of course be a straight virtualisation-as-a-service offering, or something less obvious. Or it could simply be that one is using the other’s products. And/or vice versa.

Either way, Salesforce.com and VMware are staying quiet until later this month.

Abtech, Pano Logic Partner to Offer “Zero-Client” Virtual Desktop Solution

April 13, 2010 by Robin Wauters 2 Comments

Abtech Systems, a provider of enterprise technology solutions, has teamed with manufacturing vendor partner Pano Logic to introduce The Pano System, the greener answer to tedious desktop replacement and maintenance.

Abtech, along with VMware and Pano Logic, can help companies simplify their computing infrastructure and reduce or eliminate costs for any organization. Pano Logic brands itself as the leader in zero client desktop virtualization (VDI). Its solutions are gaining a rapid following because they are radically changing desktop computing by centralizing everything – desktop management, support, and the user experience – on the server.

Executives and business managers agree that one of the most significant burdens to an IT budget is the ongoing purchase, maintenance and lifecycle management of desktop & laptop computers. Abtech solves the problem by designing a virtual desktop solution that will significantly reduce common IT issues, providing a business with a better computing experience plus greater financial benefits.

In most organizations the Pano Logic solution can be deployed in under an hour. It eliminates the complexity and overhead of endpoint devices, which can comprise 80 percent of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of thin clients, with a zero client that contains no processor, operating system, storage, drivers, nor any moving parts. By removing processing power from the endpoint, Abtech can eliminate endpoint security breaches, and drastically reduce energy consumption.

The Pano Logic device redefines green technology. At less than three watts per user, zero clients consume 97 percent less than even the most energy efficient PCs and weigh less than 16 ounces, and last seven to 10 years, compared to the average 15-pound PC that lasts three to five years, resulting in a dramatic reduction in e-waste.

Abtech expects its Pano Logic virtual desktop solution to be a hit among middle market organizations in health care, education, law, government, manufacturing, banking, and especially to companies that are subject to HIPAA and Sarbannes-Oxley compliance. Abtech can help these organizations achieve dramatic savings and benefits without the need for specialized IT competencies and staff. Thanks to Abtech, IT managers are able to deliver end users a familiar Windows experience while providing them with greater uptime and mobility to access their desktops from any zero client on the network.

Abtech offers its customized virtual desktop solution throughout its network of 18 service offices across the U.S. Abtech offers 7x24x365 support and a full compliment of maintenance and support services, which includes hardware and software maintenance, on site or remote consulting, disaster recovery, data center relocation, training, performance analyses, and capacity planning.

Verizon and IBM Team Up, Launch Private Cloud-Based Managed Data Protection Solution

April 1, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Verizon and IBM have expanded their relationship to deliver Managed  Data Vault – a new private cloud service that provides secure, quick and reliable daily backups, and fast recovery of enterprise information.

Available from both companies, the new solution is designed to automatically transfer data from a client location to a specially designed off-site data center via Verizon’s secure high-speed private network.  With Managed Data Vault, businesses can realize off-site data protection at on-site speeds while taking advantage of usage-based utility to meet data growth without limits.

Many companies today still transport their backup tapes by truck to an off-site location – a process that has proven to be a slow and unreliable approach to archiving – adding security concerns, time, complexity and cost to the data protection process.

According to industry experts, the global backup and restore market will grow by about 4 percent annually and is currently sized at nearly $3 billion.

Verizon and IBM will leverage each other’s complementary capabilities to deliver the new solution.  Verizon will provide its suite of leading global private data network solutions along with data center expertise, IT consulting services and application-aware capabilities, which give visibility into utilization and latency. IBM will supply backup infrastructure and management capabilities, supported by its extensive information protection expertise and more than 40 years experience in business continuity and resiliency.

Ideal for global enterprises with stringent security and performance requirements, Managed Data Vault is an excellent match for the financial, retail and health care services markets. The service is well-suited to a diverse mixture of applications, databases and operating system (OS) support services and comes complete with IT consulting services support to help organizations manage through this process.

This solution will initially be available to Verizon and IBM clients in the New York City metropolitan area.

Wyse Adds Multiplatform Support for Microsoft RemoteFX

March 19, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Wyse Technology today announced plans to support Microsoft RemoteFX technology, enabling rich media experience across all Wyse client platforms.

As desktop virtualization adoption continues to grow, end users and IT administrators are seeing the benefits of being able to experience a complete desktop experience on any device, and not be limited to a PC. For IT users, this enables the acceleration of desktop and application deployment; for end users they benefit from flexible work scenarios such as the ability to work from home.

In addition, information and applications are kept safe in the datacenter, reducing the risk of laptop data and simplifying the burden of regulatory compliance through central management. Finally, the integration of Microsoft RemoteFX with Wyse devices helps to increase remote worker efficiency, by quickly and securely connecting remote workers with the applications they need through a simple Web connection. These remote workers will have the equivalent of a PC experience, but with none of the management or security liabilities inherent in personal computers.

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is expected to be released at a later date. To receive the latest updates on Wyse client solutions, subscribe at http://www.wyse.com/wyseview/index.asp

Devon IT Announces Plans for Integration of Thin Client Solutions with Microsoft RemoteFX

March 19, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Devon IT, a provider of thin client hardware and software solutions , today announced plans to support Microsoft RemoteFX, a feature being developed for Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, in a future version of Devon IT products.

“Devon IT has been a recognized innovator in developing cutting-edge alternative desktop technologies for the last five years,” explained Joe Makoid, President, Devon IT. “When an iconic company like Microsoft, which has built the modern desktop computer industry into what it is today, announces technology like Microsoft RemoteFX it is a market setting and industry changing event. It is exciting for us to announce our full support of Microsoft RemoteFX.

The VDI Blaster, the Devon TC5, the E5400X SafeBook and the new Devon RemoteFX Zero client will provide our customers and business partners with powerful , graphically rich and energy efficient solutions for their desktop deployments. The RemoteFX-based products and technologies from Devon IT will fundamentally help our customers increase their desktop computing productivity and reduce their costs.”

Devon IT is developing a Microsoft RemoteFX software client that will be integrated into its Devon Terminal System (DeTOS) and VDI Blaster products. The RemoteFX client will allow users to take advantage of rich media features such as 3D user interface, video, animations, and portable graphics stacks like Microsoft Silverlight and Flash, and a diverse array of client-side devices. This means that customers who purchase a Devon IT thin client such as the TC5 today will be able to upgrade DeTOS and take advantage of Microsoft RemoteFX when it becomes available.

Historically the end-user experience has been a factor limiting the usability in some remote desktops. Microsoft RemoteFX gives an enhanced user experience regardless of the type of application (3D, web based video streaming, etc). Since RemoteFX relies on server-side rendering, it enables Devon IT to build simplified thin clients that do not need to be upgraded as new multimedia players or codecs are created. This allows customers to deploy low cost, highly secure, highly reliable and centrally manageable thin clients even to their most demanding users.
