Quantum Acquires Pancetera Software For $12 Million

Quantum, a provider of backup, recovery and archive solutions, today announced that it has acquired Pancetera Software, a privately held company that aims to reduce the complexity and cost of managing and protecting data in virtual server environments.

The $12 million transaction consisted of $8.4 million in cash and $3.6 million in Quantum common stock (approximately 1.2 million shares), and is expected to be accretive to operating profit by the end of the current fiscal year.

For Quantum, the acquisition adds key assets for enhancing data management in virtual environments. Pancetera technology is already compatible with Quantum’s DXi disk backup and deduplication products, and the company plans to further integrate the technology into its longer-term roadmaps for both DXi and its StorNext file sharing and archive offerings.

The acquisition also adds significant virtualization and storage management expertise to Quantum. Nearly all the Pancetera employees have joined the company, including co-founders Mitch Haile (CTO and VP, Product Management) and Greg Wade (VP, Engineering), as well as CEO Henrik Rosendahl.

VMware Buys SaaS Company Digital Fuel

VMware has announced its intention to acquire Digital Fuel, a provider of IT Financial and Business Management SaaS solutions.

Digital Fuel’s solutions enable companies to plan, manage and optimize cost and value in the emerging world of cloud based dynamic IT.

With this acquisition, VMware will enable enterprises to more effectively manage the business impact of IT environments, centralizing visibility of IT costs, integrating financial discipline into IT decisions, and delivering meaningful measurements and reports that drive engagement with the CFO and line of business stakeholders.

Terms of the acquisition were not announced.

The acquisition is scheduled to close in July 2011, subject to customary closing conditions.

Virsto Lands $12 Million To “Transform Virtual Machine Storage”, Buys EvoStor

Virsto™ Software has raised $12 million in Series B venture capital funding to drive new growth, product development and expand industry partnerships. The funding was led by InterWest Partners, and previous investors August Capital and Canaan Partners also participated in the round.

Khaled Nasr, a partner at InterWest who focuses on enterprise IT and data center infrastructure, will join Virsto’s board of directors.

In addition, Virsto today announced its acquisition of EvoStor, a company specializing in storage virtualization technology for VMware environments, to further deliver on the vision of multi-hypervisor support for reliable, heterogeneous, high-performance and low-cost storage.

Founded in 2007, Virsto has developed a hypervisor-based storage solution built for virtual machines. A close partner of Citrix and Microsoft, the company has a track record of advancing storage virtualization in the enterprise.

Today’s news also includes the acquisition of intellectual property and key team members from EvoStor, deepening Virsto’s bench of talent and technology.

EvoStor was an early innovator in the VMware storage market, delivering easy-to-deploy, reliable, scalable and affordable solutions. The strong partnership between EvoStor and VMware will benefit Virsto as it readies its software solutions for additional hypervisor platforms.

The new Virsto R&D team in Melbourne, Australia is working on near-term products that will be launched in coming months, as well as next-generation technology to be released in 2012.

The $12 million in Series B financing follows a $7 million Series A round in June 2009, with more than $20 million raised to date.

VMware Buys Enterprise Social Collaboration Provider Socialcast

At the end of last month, VMware announced the acquisition of Socialcast, a provider of social collaboration solutions for the enterprise.

Socialcast enables modern business communication by “uniting people, information and enterprise applications within collaborative communities”.

Delivered as a hosted service, private cloud implementation, or via an on-premise solution, Socialcast is used by some of the world’s largest enterprises including Avaya, Humana, Nokia, Philips Electronics, SAS and … VMware.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Socialcast joins the recent acquisitions of SlideRocket and Zimbra, along with the introduction of VMware Horizon App Manager, in helping advance VMware’s vision for a modern end-user computing model.

Citrix Acquires “VDI-in-a-Box” Company Kaviza

Citrix Systems recently announced that it has acquired Kaviza, makers of an all-in-one “VDI-in-a-Box” solution for small and medium business. It complements the company’s XenDesktop product line for enterprise-class desktop virtualization.

Kaviza VDI-in-a-Box is not just a scaled-down enterprise product, but instead gives SMB customers everything they need to “go virtual” with VDI in a single, easy-to-deploy software virtual appliance.

Customers can continue to purchase VDI-in-a-box from Kaviza resellers. Starting July 1, 2011 customers will also be able to buy from Citrix Solution Advisors.

BMC Software Acquires Web App Performance Management Software Company Coradiant

BMC Software recently moved to acquire Coradiant, a provider of end-user experience and web application performance monitoring.

This acquisition enhances BMC’s ability to offer businesses a 360-degree view of service performance – from end-user experience and behavior to infrastructure.

The new BMC End User Experience Management solution based on Coradiant’s technology is to enable business and IT service managers to see and understand how application performance affects end-user behavior and ultimately the business by providing complete visibility into real-time, end-to-end performance of enterprise, cloud and SaaS-based applications.

By monitoring the end-user’s experience, organizations can protect revenue, enhance productivity and ensure operational stability for their business-critical applications.

Coradiant also brings partnerships, such as the one with Akamai to deliver solutions that manage, optimize and ensure the value of application performance acceleration delivered via the cloud.

BMC says an “aggressive product integration plan” is already underway.
