VMware vSphere 4 Arrives Ahead Of Schedule

May 22, 2009 by Robin Wauters 4 Comments

VMware yesterday announced the general availability of VMware vSphere 4, delivered ahead of schedule and with the support of an extensive partner ecosystem and customers around the globe.

VMware vSphere 4 extends the previous generation VMware platform — VMware Infrastructure 3 — along three dimensions: it delivers the efficiency and performance required to run business critical applications in large scale environments, it provides uncompromised control over application security and service levels, and it preserves customer choice of hardware, OS, application architecture and on-premise vs. off-premise application hosting.

VMware vSphere 4 enables transformative capital and operational expenditure cost savings over and above what was previously achievable, including 30 percent increase in consolidation ratios, 50 percent storage savings, and 20 percent additional power savings. With VMware vSphere 4, even the most resource intensive business critical applications will benefit from the built-in service level assurance capabilities for availability, security and scalability.

Customers are already harnessing VMware vSphere 4 to bring the benefits of cloud computing to their datacenters, creating a practical approach to their own private clouds — cloud computing infrastructures that span internal IT with external cloud service providers.

VMware vSphere 4 is available in six editions meeting the requirements, use cases and budgets of customers of all sizes from small businesses to the largest enterprises and government organizations. Prices start at $166 per processor for all in one virtualization solutions for small businesses and go up to VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus priced at $3,495 per processor delivering features to transform the datacenter into an internal private cloud.

EMC VP Chad Sakac: “We Want To Leave VMware Independent”

May 20, 2009 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

At the EMC annual user conference (EMC World 2009), Chad Sakac, VP of the VMware Technology Alliance at EMC, told IT PRO magazine that the company reaffirms the promise it made to keep VMware as an independent company.

“We are determined to leave them independent. Both EMC customers and non-EMC customers have thanked us. We want everyone to have access to the technology but come to EMC on merit.”

But also:

“No-one knows what is around the corner but it would be short sighted of us to do it as this point. There are no plans [to remove its independence] in the works now and no plans to do so in the future.”

Doesn’t sound all too convincing, agrees VMBlog, who alerted us to the IT Pro article.

Exec Exodus At VMware: CIO Tayloe Stansbury And EMEA Marketing Director Reza Malekzadeh Split

May 19, 2009 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

More and more high-profile VMware executives are leaving the company to start their own businesses or join other technology ventures. Virtualizatio.info brings us the news that both Tayloe Stansbury (former CIO) and Reza Malekzadeh (former Sr. Director, Products & Marketing, EMEA) have left the virtualization leader.

Stansbury is joining business service provider Intuit as CTO, while we don’t yet know which job Malekzadeh has accepted (or if he has already accepted another job for that matter) – his LinkedIn profile still shows his old role at VMware.

Neptuny To support VMware vSphere By The End Of This Year

May 8, 2009 by Robin Wauters 1 Comment

Neptuny today announced that Neptuny Caplan will support VMware vSphere by the end of 2009.

VMware vSphere, launched last week as “the industry’s first cloud operating system” has been designed to enable customers to transform their IT infrastructures into a federation of private and on-demand to external clouds. The final promise of vSphere (and other similar initiatives) is making IT services more easily accessible, flexible and reliable, thus providing more control over service levels, without increasing infrastructure complexity and costs.

Neptuny recently joined VMware’s Technology Alliance Partner program and Caplan, its flagship product providing Capacity Planning for large data centers and networks, fully supports virtualized environments based on VMware technology.

In particular, Caplan supports consolidation and virtualization initiatives on ESX servers by first identifying the best candidates and targets and then suggesting optimal placements (with respect to technical, business and compliance criteria) together with suggestions on how to assign appropriate resource shares. Therefore, by supporting VMware vSphere, Neptuny will enable customers to adopt the vSphere technology and to manage all resources of the next-generation data centers with the same ease of use available in Caplan.

Release: HyTrust Appliance Community Edition

May 7, 2009 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

HyTrust recently announced the availability of HyTrust Appliance Community Edition, a free product that delivers a central point of control for management and visibility of virtualized environments. HyTrust Appliance Community Edition features the same functionality, features, and benefits as the company’s Enterprise Edition but is limited to three protected hypervisor hosts. HyTrust also announced that it has built and made available a new online community to support this strategic vision and provide a central repository for sharing information, gathering feedback and fostering interaction among community members. One of the key drivers behind Community Edition is to enable small and medium businesses to cost-effectively gain the same features and benefits for their virtualized environments as their counterparts in the largest enterprises.

In addition to serving the needs of the SMB market, HyTrust aims to build a community of professionals who are committed to growing the reach of cloud-based computing services and expanding the use of virtualization throughout their organizations. Community Edition enables large enterprises to quickly and easily evaluate HyTrust Appliance capabilities in their environments. Most importantly, HyTrust is now able to widely disseminate its product and gain valuable insight directly via Community feedback. This will lead to more rapid product development and innovation, allowing HyTrust to respond quickly to an already dynamic and rapidly changing marketplace.

HyTrust Appliance Community Edition is now available for download as a pre-built, VMware-compatible virtual appliance to members of HyTrust Community.
