February 25, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

NComputing, the global leader in virtual desktops with over 15 million daily users, today announced that the company’s full product line will support the new Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 operating system from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). NComputing virtual desktop kits are based on the company’s vSpace desktop virtualization software and are available in three product lines which are designed to bring ultra low-cost computing to customers ranging from enterprises to small businesses, as well as schools, NGOs and governments.
Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 works with vSpace as an economical platform to deliver virtual desktops to low-cost thin clients with pricing and performance that will be attractive to a wide range of customers.
California School Sets Up NComputing / Windows MultiPoint Server Lab
Rheem School in Moraga, California set up a lab based on Windows MultiPoint Server with NComputing vSpace software and U170 (U-series) clients to the delight of faculty, staff, administration and teachers.
–       The new shared PCs run considerably faster and more reliably in the new lab than the four year old PCs run in the older lab.
–       The 30-seat lab was set up in a matter of hours because of the simplicity of installing the Windows MultiPoint Server operating system on 5 shared PCs and the NComputing USB plug-and-play clients.
–       The Windows MultiPoint Server and NComputing combination is the most cost-effective way to give Rheem’s students a state-of-the-art Windows 7 user experience.
The NComputing Product Line
NComputing has three product lines, which are based on how the thin clients connect to the PC/server.
–       The X-series, which connect through a PCI card, and which deliver superb multimedia at the lowest possible cost.
–       The U-series, which is the simplest solution to connect, because they just snap into standard USB ports. They deliver top-notch multimedia at very low prices.
–       The L-series, which connect through standard Ethernet networks, and as such deliver the most flexible architectures and configurations.
Quotes
“The strong support we’ve already seen from NComputing will be instrumental to the development of valuable, innovative solutions for the Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 platform,” said Ira Snyder, general manager, Windows MultiPoint Server at Microsoft.  “The creation of shared resource computing solutions like NComputing’s  using Windows MultiPoint Server will provide even more policymakers, teachers, and students with access to affordable, security-enhanced, and easy-to-use technology.”
“In just three years, NComputing has established itself as the only desktop virtualization company that delivers ultra-low cost, with great performance, and in a variety of models that allow customers to buy the perfect solution,” said Stephen Dukker, CEO and chairman of NComputing. “The new Microsoft and NComputing partnership is helping us deliver even more choices for our customers. This will expand the market even faster than it has been growing.”
“We researched many virtual desktops over the past year,” said Courtney Guinn, Director of Instructional Technology. “We were impressed by the simplicity of the NComputing and Windows MultiPoint Server solution and the fact that it required no new infrastructure.”
“The thing that kills us over time is that PCs have to be replaced every four years or so. So even if we get a good budget one year in ten, it creates an obligation that we can’t afford to keep up with. By sharing PCs with Windows MultiPoint Server and NComputing, we’ve drastically reduced the amount of money we need to keep up,” said Guy Seltzer, district Network Administrator

February 23, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

TippingPoint, a leading provider of network security and a division of 3Com, and Reflex Systems, a pioneer in virtualization systems management solutions, today announced a partnership that will enable organizations to secure virtual networks with the same technology used for physical networks. The partnership integrates Reflex’s Virtualization Management Center (VMC) solution with TippingPoint’s industry-leading Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) to provide customers with comprehensive security, visibility and performance across both physical and virtual network infrastructures.
Companies are adopting virtualization at a rapid pace for cost, energy, and speed of deployment benefits. As they move mission critical data to virtual environments, they find themselves requiring the same enterprise-class security in their virtual networks as they do across their physical networks. Securing and managing the virtual environment requires a different approach and a new set of technologies that are purpose-built for the virtual environment.
As part of its recently launched TippingPoint Virtual Controller (vController), TippingPoint will use Reflex Systems’ vTrust™ technology to enable more sophisticated segmentation (virtual trust zones), policy enforcement, as well as monitoring, filtering and control of VM-to-VM traffic. vTrust also takes advantage of VMware’s VMsafe API to deliver a more granular level of visibility and control into communication within the VMware virtual environment.
“Virtualization delivers on the promise of an agile, more cost-effective IT infrastructure. However, it also makes it easier than ever to introduce risk into the enterprise,” said Pete Privateer, president and CEO, Reflex Systems. “Fortunately, by leveraging advancements in security and management technologies, organizations can minimize their risk and realize the benefits of virtualization. We are pleased to partner with TippingPoint, the industry’s leading IPS vendor, to provide a high level of visibility and control across the entire network.”
Security and Management of Virtual Environments
Reflex’s award-winning Virtualization Management Center (VMC) manages and protects virtual servers, desktops, and networks providing a management for security and compliance that correlates infrastructure configuration changes with network services and security events. This integrated approach enables enterprise organizations to improve performance while increasing business efficiency and business continuity in the virtual data center.
Reflex VMC is designed to provide customers with the essential capabilities needed to effectively manage and secure complex, dynamic virtual environments, capitalize on their existing virtualization investment, reduce cost through efficient management, minimize downtime, and maintain a reliable virtualized infrastructure running critical applications. OpenECP, An ECP Fork

February 11, 2010 by Kris Buytaert Leave a Comment

Yesterday I got a new Twitter follower, OpenECP , given the open in it’s title … I had a look and I saw an Open Source Elastic Cloud Computing platform. (A virtual Machine Management platform if you don’t want to use the “Cloud” hype terminology.

The attentive reader might remember us announcing Enomaly ECP releases before..

However this was something different

Sam Johnston announces on his blog that he is pleased to announce
I am pleased to announce the immediate availability of the Open Elastic Computing Platform (OpenECP) Version 4.0 Alpha (openecp-4.0alpha.tar.gz), provisionally tested on Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (screenshots). This is an open source fork of the Enomaly ECP product following its abrupt commercialisation in November 2009, which resolves a number of serious security vulnerabilities. For more information refer to:

http://www.openecp.org/
OpenECP is a web-based management platform for Linux-based hypervisors including KVM and Xen which can be used to create “public” and “private” cloud computing environments.

He goes on to say
It will always be freely available under the Affero General Public License v3 or similar.

Sam apparently forked the platform after he noticed that Enomaly had closed the upcoming versions of their platform and didn’t look like it was planning on providing fixes for security issue he found within the platform.

Reuven Cohen stated on twitter that they made the changes in license because
“ECP 3.0 is a significantly different product than 2.0 servicing different market needs. Enabling Service providers to generate IaaS revenue.

ECP 2.0 doesn’t include the thousands of hours we’ve put into ECP 3.0, no cloning, no vlan, no metering / billing, no customer dashboard.

Re: Open Vs Proprietary, as a self funded company. Monetizing Free was very difficult. Proprietary gives us revenue to increase dev & supprt”

Fact is that @ruv and @samj aren’t really best friends there has been some more namecalling on Twitter before.

Apart from having the source code available, another important part of Open Source is community …so the question that time will answer, will OpenECP gain tracktion and community

Pano Logic Self-Reports Solid 2009

February 3, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Pano Logic, zero client desktop virtualization (VDI) provider, today announced a surge in sales of its zero client computing platform in 2009, with customers rewarded with as much as 67% savings in computing total cost of ownership.

Pano Logic sales tripled last year, with strong momentum in sales among both existing and new customers for 2010. New and existing resellers realized significant financial rewards of increasing demand for Pano Logic’s innovative approach and the widespread adoption among organizations looking to reap the benefits of virtualization at the desktop that only Pano Logic can provide.

Innovative organizations are adopting Pano Logic’s zero client computing platform because it provides an easy, secure and cost-effective way to leverage virtualization and completely centralize desktop computing. Organizations in health care, education, government, manufacturing, banking, professional services and many other industries are achieving drastic reductions in management and energy costs, while eliminating desktop security breaches, all resulting in dramatic savings in TCO. In addition to cost savings, Pano Logic significantly increases end user productivity by delivering an optimal user experience and greater mobility from the ease with which users can log in and log out of their virtual machines from any zero client Pano Device within the organization.

The zero client design also uses 97 percent less electricity than a PC, resulting in dramatic reductions in energy costs and demands on the power grid. Winthrop & Weinstine, a Minneapolis-St. Paul law firm, is transitioning its PCs to Pano Logic virtual desktops and estimates it will save $10,000 annually on energy costs once their upgrade plan is complete.

Unlike any other VDI or thin client vendor, Pano Logic centralizes 100% of end user computing power onto the virtualized server. All of the processing power is managed at the server; the zero client Pano Device is completely dumb and simply connects the end user to the computing resources. With a Pano Device at the endpoint, there is no processor, no operating system, no memory, no drivers, no software and no moving parts — resulting in absolutely zero endpoint management. Also unlike any other vendor, Pano Logic provides an entire solution, including the clients, the virtualization software and management tools for deploying and managing virtual desktops. This eliminates the need to cobble together a myriad of solutions from several vendors and create complex workarounds to meet individual needs.

The growing interest and demand for Pano Logic’s solution follows a broader industry trend toward more widespread adoption of virtual desktops. Gartner predicts the worldwide hosted virtual desktop (HVD) market will accelerate through 2013 to reach 49 million units, up from more than 500,000 units in 2009, and that worldwide HVD revenue will grow from about $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion in 2009, which is less than 1 percent of the worldwide professional PC market, to $65.7 billion in 2013, which will be equal to more than 40 percent of the worldwide professional PC market.

Drawing organizations to Pano Logic’s desktop virtualization solution are a number of benefits in addition to lower overall TCO. The Pano Logic zero clients can be installed in the harshest working environments, from factory floors to toxic testing sites, and its rugged design withstands the elements while giving workers access to their personal virtual machine from any device. Security is also enhanced because of the nature of the zero clients — no processing power or local storage — and the centralized controls to manage access rights to computing, as well as to local USB drives, printers or scanners.

Dialectic Networks Reboots As IBM/System x Reseller of Virtualized Solutions

February 3, 2010 by Robin Wauters Leave a Comment

Dialectic Networks, an IT support company, today announced its re-emergence as an LLC and now an IBM/System x reseller and IT services company focused on enabling a “savings triangle” for its customers by utilizing the latest developments in open source software, modular data center designs, and cloud computing using trusted IBM hardware and software.

With energy costs rising as well as the growing demand for highly available compute and storage capacity that can quickly scale, modular and/or portable modular data center (PMDC) environments offer cutting-edge technology that deliver optimum return on investment. DN helps implement these environments, which offer reduced up-front capital and on-going operational expenses vs. more traditional ‘brick and mortar’ installations. Together with virtualized environments and cloud computing solutions, DN’s total cost of ownership designs will result in less front-end construction costs, lower overall costs for power and cooling, and lower costs to manage with time and labor-saving efficiencies.

DN integrates the physical components, software, and infrastructure and offers implementation services for private/public/or hybrid cloud computing environments to its customers, including migration and software management. It generally recommends x86 servers and storage from a full range of IBM rack-mounted servers/blades, including iDataPlex servers for increased density and XIV storage for reliability and power savings. The company also specializes in complete server virtualization solutions with open-source software expertise.

The new PMDC’s can house up to 2,016 high-end, state-of-the-art servers and compatible storage in many flexible configurations in a single container, and additional containers can be integrated quickly as needed. They come with options for multiple carrier fiber connectivity, appropriate data center infrastructure including fully redundant power/cooling and environmental insulation and security, and are available in deploy-ready shipping containers of 20, 40, or 53 feet in length to meet the demand of rapidly growing IT infrastructure needs.
