Big Switch Networks, a network virtualization startup currently in stealth mode, has raised $13.8 million in funding according to an SEC filing (via FormDs).

The Palo Alto company is led by Guido Appenzeller, a former Stanford assistant professor, former co-founder and CTO at Voltage Security and entrepreneur-in-residence at Morgenthaler Ventures (see his LinkedIn profile)

His co-founder and VP of Sales & Marketing is Kyle Forster, formerly VP of Product Management at Joost and Product Manager at Cisco Systems.

According to a LinkedIn company profile, Big Switch is commercializing network virtualization technologies based on OpenFlow, a research technology from Stanford University’s Computer Science department.

The company’s board includes Shirish Sathaye of Menlo Park-based Khosla Ventures, Mike Volpi of Switzerland-based Index Ventures and former Mountain View-based Veritas Software Chairman and CEO Mark Leslie.
